'If clause' grammar is very important in Kerala PSC English grammar questions. You will get one or two marks from this section. It is very easy and doesn't spoil the marks from this area. We simply explain how to get the answer from IF Clause questions in any manner. First of all, read the rules, don't worry it is similar to the tenses in English grammar. After the study of all the types work out the examples and previous question papers give below.
| Type -1 (Simple Present => Simple Future |
| If the first clause of an 'IF' clause is in Simple Present Tense, the next clause must be in Simple Future Tense and vice versa. Example: If you study well, you will pass. |
| Type -2 (Simple Past => Would |
| If the first clause of an 'IF' clause is in simple past tense, the next clause must contain 'would' and vice versa. Eg: If you called me, I would come. |
| Type -3 (Past Perfect => Future Perfect |
| If the first clause of an 'IF' clause is in past perfect tense (had+V3), the next clause must be in 'would have +V3/should have +V3 (Future Perfect Tense)' form and vice versa. Example: If you had played well, you would have passed. |
